Flying and squees

I can has one more vacation before the year ends! *bounces*

After a year full of horrid and scary flight experiences, I vowed in August not to fly until Infinitus. Well, so much for that vow!! Southwest is having a sale right now for flights in early December (until tomorrow - so hurry if you haven't checked it out yet), and after seeing that I could get a round-trip ticket to visit Dixiebell12 for $100, I decided to suck it up. *squees excitedly* I really do hate flying, but sometimes it's worth it. I just hope an engine doesn't explode this time like it did on the flight of doom to Chicago for zibit_con. I should add that the dang engine exploded less than a minute after Dixiebell was teasing me and saying a bird would fly into the engine and explode. LOL! It was one of those M80 planes with engine right up against the window toward the back of the plane...and yes, Dixiebell and I were right next to the engine that went 'bang'. Her head was not a foot away. *shudders* Anyway, I'm still a bit jittery about flying but I think I'm more excited than scared! *squees madly* *jumps up and down excitedly* *squees some more* I'm so ready to get the heck outta TX for a bit.

HP-DFW Meetup

I'm very sleepy and a bit tipsy...so this is going to be short and probably incoherent.

I actually left the house today to go somewhere that wasn't the office! Yay! I spent the afternoon at droxy's along with irishredlass69 who is in town from Wisconsin and staying with her. It was a lovely afternoon filled with this effing amazing cheese from a can, chocolate, and wine. There was droxy!snape, interesting situations/settings, and a TON of picture-taking. I believe some are soopersecret for now...so I'll let one of the other girls post about them because I don't want to accidentally ruin anything. x)

After an afternoon of pictures, we went to an HPDFW meetup party. Although I live in the Dallas area, I'd never been to one before because I really am rather shy and tend to be a bit antisocial. I'm glad I went. It was a lot of fun and I met some more local HP geeks which was awesome. They had a little costume contest and somehow I managed to win!! *squees* I never win things, so I was incredibly embarrassed. I got one of those Snape patches as a prize...I didn't have one so I was very excited. I was tempted to go as a DE tonight (want to use my DM wand), but I dressed as Luna instead. There were no DEs there, so I think I'll defintely need to do a DE for the next party they have.

I know I've been rather out of touch lately. I'm very behind on LJ and I'm sorry I've been so horrible about commenting lately. I'm usually not this much of an LJ slacker, but I've been working entirely too much. I'm terrible about tracking my hours, but I tracked them this week and last, and wow! I had no idea my work schedule had gotten so out of control. It turns out that I had worked 70 hour week last week and about 60 hours this week.  I was shocked. Normally my job is not this demanding, but with 2010 budgeting now in full swing along with a lot of interesting changes happening within the landscape of the industry, we analysts have been in high demand. I've gotten to the point where I'm having to tell people 'no'...I don't like saying no, but I can't please everyone.

Anyway - after these crazy-long days in front of a computer screen, the last thing I fee l like doing when I get home is sit in front of a screen again. Things should be calming down soon, so I should be around more often. So, what have I been doing instead of being online?

Death eater crafting!!!!! The craft bug is apparently catching.

I've been wandmaking. I started to play around with wandmaking this summer. My first wand was a pure paperclay wand (geminiscorp has this wand now), but after using the wand for Azkatraz and HWW, I decided it needed to be sturdier.  I'd also made a last minute, very plain wand, with a combo of paperclay and a wooden dowel.  This clay/wood wand was very sturdy, and I didn't break it or bend it (the poor wand geminiscorp has now got snapped, glued, bent...LOL). Anyway, I decided to make another paperclay/wood wand, so I made a dark mark wand!!!   I have another one drying, but here's some pics of a completed DM wand.

In addition to DM wands, I've been toying with the idea of making House wands. For example, a Hufflepuff wand might have a badger on it, Ravenclaw a raven. Is that a completely crazy idea?

I've also been playing around with making molds and casting dark marks in resin. This is harder said than done. And messy. I have no idea what I'm doing, but it's been an adventure. I started by sculpting dark marks out of Sculpy. I then used some molding puddy I got at Michael's to make the DM molds.   I then used the molds for resin casting (resin also purchased at Michael's). The only type of Resin Michael's had was clear and they didn't have any coloring for it, so I tried to dye them green with food coloring. They turned blue, but my hands stayed green for nearly three days. LOL. I tried a different type of food coloring and they turned out green. Yay! I really need to order some proper resin coloring though. Anyway, I plan to make DM pendants, earrings, cloak clasps, and anything else that tickles my fancy.   Here are some pics, but these are still not fully dry and are still a bit "bendy", so I haven't cleaned the rough edges and polished them...I'll post more pics once I get that finished.

Stitch n Bitch

Yesterday Droxy hosted a stitch and bitch. I arrived around noon followed shortly by apollinav. After eating some cheesecake and discussing our plans for the day, we headed out to a section of Dallas that was quite literally a 'fabric district'. There was a whole line of huge fabric stores that were nestled between two strip clubs on Harry Hines Blvd. The first store (more like warehouse) we went to was massive. The selection was huge, nearly overwhelming, and the prices were okay. It would definitely be a good place to go if you were looking for something completely off the wall like bright, egg yolk yellow fabric and lace. x) But wow, they had some ugly-ass fabric. I wish I'd brought my camera because they had an entire room dedicated to all types of spandex. It was rather disturbing. We then went to a few other fabric stores, and while none of us went wild buying things, none of us returned home empty handed.

So yes, I bought yellow fabric for my next Luna costume. You can see some pics of it here in Droxy's post. Droxy and apollinav helped me get a start on it and gave me some guidance on the next steps from where we left off. It's looking very, erm, yellow. We did a bit stitching (apollinav taught me how to do a French stitch!) and really not much bitching while we had a few glasses of wine. All in all, a lovely day and evening. Thanks so much ladies for helping me get the costume going! I might be calling/emailing with questions as I go! I think I'll wear sunglasses while sewing this one...the yellow is just so damned bright!!!

Happy birthday dressagegrrrl!!! It was so great to meet you in Chicago. Going up to the sky deck at Willis Tower, romping around Navy Pier in costume, riding a carousel and ferris wheel, and then topping the night off with a limo ride...we had too much fun! It is definitely one of the most memorable nights of my life. It wouldn't have been the same if we hadn't met you! I hope you've had a wonderful birthday! *hugs*

HWW Picspam Part 2 - Willis Tower and DEs Gone Wild

After the Exhibition and the very cozy cab ride, we felt we hadn't caused Chicago enough trouble yet, so dixiebell12, dressagegrrrl, brenamarie, jessikitty, and I went to Sears Tower (or Willis Tower, as it is now known). We decided to go as Muggles since we thought security might be tight (and it was).

We had to check out the new all glass 'ledges' (basically a large glass cubes sticking out from the side of the building on the 103rd floor).
Dixiebell nearly gave a woman a heart attack by doing a handstand against the glass (Dix has a pic of that here: http://dixiebell12.livejournal.com/109961.html#cutid1 ). The woman demanded to see the pic after we took it...I guess she couldn't believe her eyes. LOL.

After the tower, we decided we STILL hadn't caused enough mayhem, so we all got back into costume and headed to Navy Pier for some Death Eater fun. We were an odd crowd - two DEs, a Hufflepuff (brenamarie), a Slytherin (jessikitty), and Rosmerta (dressagegrrrl).

Some HWW Picspam

The weekend in Chicago was amazing! It was wonderful to meet so many lovely ladies and to see some familiar faces again. It's always really neat to put a face and a voice with a name. I wish I'd had time to chat with everyone more! Those that weren't able to make it, I missed you terribly and I'm looking forward to seeing you in Orlando. :) I was a bit of a slacker with the camera, but I did get some photos. I'll post a few tonight - more in the coming days.

I didn't get any pictures in the Exhibition. They were not allowed and while I was tempted to sneak some, dixiebell12 and I were followed very closely through the entire exhibit by an employee. I think perhaps the conversation dixiebell had with him in front of Rickman's costume (which was near the beginning) was probably the cause of the suspicion.

Azkatraz - Sunday and Monday - LOTS of picspam

Sorry - I was having technical difficulties, but I think I have it now (*crosses fingers*). Let's try this again.

Sunday and Monday were my Luna Lovegood cotstume days. I managed to drag myself out of bed and throw on a Luna costume in time for the panel by juniperus , dickgloucester , and machshefa . I'm glad I made it down there because it was one of the more interesting sessions of all the programming I attended. themoreyouclean met me there armed with black tea and a bagel for which I was very grateful.

I did do some wandering about in the muggle world as Luna (in the pink jacket/blue tights costume). It was an interesting experience after having spent the prior few days as a Death Eater. I suppose Luna's costume isn't as obviously a costume to the muggle eye, so I almost felt like I got stranger looks from people in her costume than I did in my DE one. I had a few people stop to ask where I got my "sunglasses".

I’m ~~rather~~ extremely tipsy (thanks for the booze droxy), so apologies for any typos/incoherent sentences. I'm also having issues with the LJ user links...so I'll fix that once I'm less foggy-brained.

Saturday morning was the welcoming breakfast, er, feast thing. The morning is rather blurry to me now, but I somehow managed to throw on my death eater gear. At some point my roomies (themoreyouclean, madamsnape, sabrebabe) and I made our way out into the hall where a werewolf (Fenrir Greyback to be exact) was waiting for us (dixiebell12 in her amazing GB costume):

Now that I've been mucking about in PhotoShop and GIMP for a while, I'm beginning to feel the urge to go back and redo/touch up some of my art. The first victim is Snape and Books.

I attempted to improve the background, added some shadowing details, inserted a quill and parchment, and added a title to one of the books.

So much happened at Azkatraz that it’s all sort of a blur.

I headed to the airport Thursday morning after very little sleep (too excited to drift off) and met dixiebell12and her daughter Hayley. Squeeing ensued. AA sucks and changed my seat assignment, so my previously assigned seat next to dix was changed for a seat all the way in the back, center section. We arrived at SFO and met up with my hotel roomie themoreyouclean, and later, alabastardragon, alabastard, skarlettfever, and a few others whose names escape me. We took the Bart to the hotel and though I’ve never been motion sick from riding on trains before, I was feeling a bit woozy by the end. Luckily for everyone, I kept my airport food down, and we made it safely to the station.

I met up with my other roomies madamsnapeand sabrebabe. We were among the lucky few that were actually able to check into the room immediately. After getting semi-settled in, it was off to the SSHG meetup, where I saw familiar faces from my single day at Portus last year and squealed at everyone else whose names I recognized. Friday found me bleary eyed, but ready to have some fun. The day was really a blur but for stomping around the streets of SF in our DE gear and then hitting the hotel bar for a drink.

Then it was off to the Snapecast meetup! That was amazing. It was so cool to meet all of them and fellow Snape fans. I handed out ‘Snape Nose Soap - For Dirty Fan girls’ (a few were ‘Because Shampoo is for Gryffindors‘), which was fun. I wish I’d had more - I never thought I’d run out of them so quickly! I’m still squeeing over the goodies they handed out. I’ve been wearing the ‘Property of the Half Blood Prince’ dog tags since I got home. I was too busy squeeing to get many pics of this meetup, but there is a flickr pool here.

Now, you’d think I’d be completely exhausted after all of this. Well, I was, but I sucked it up and took a cable car ride and trek over to Pier 39 with madamsnape, sbrande, ellaselelupin, dixiebell12, and Hayley. I discovered that madamsnape and sbrande walk really, really effing fast (LOL). It was a chilly and fun adventure.

I don’t remember much after the pier, so I must’ve gone directly to my room and passed out.

I’ve got more picspam (including some awesome Greyback shots!) to post from Sat-Mon and I will probably get to it tomorrow or Sunday. It’s been so great to see everyone else’s pics! I can’t wait to see more!

This weekend was spent at Droxy's working on a Luna dress for the ball at Azkatraz. Before anything, I need to say that droxy rocks my socks. I owe her a million times over for helping me with this project. She was out of town working/training her ass off all week, came back with a nasty cold, and then worked with hideous pink fucking glitter organza to make this dress with me. Now that, my dear flist, is the definition of 'one tough cookie' in my book. If you run into her at Azkatraz, be sure to ask her about "the Luna dress" to hear a long series of creative cuss words. :)

The dress turned out to be QUITE the project. Droxy describes the details better than I could in her post here: http://droxy.livejournal.com/199936.html If I tried to describe what we did, sewing 'thingies to thingies' would be the most common phrase. I'm still learning my sewing vocab, but this weekend definitely helped.

I don't have any pics of the dress yet but will post some eventually...before or after Azkatraz, I can't be sure.

Work is going to chaos, preparing for Az is going to be chaos, dealing with my car is going to be chaos...my life in general is looking to be pretty chaotic in the next few weeks, so please forgive me if I'm a bad little flister.

B-qui is watching television (very loudly) in the next room and I swear, that car commercial for the Kia Soul has come on at least a dozen times. I'm sitting here repeating over and over in my head: "Front, back, side to side, front front back back side to side'. ACK!!!!! EVIL!!!!!!!

I know, I've posted like a gazillion times, but I wanted to get this up before leaving town.

This is for hilaritasetlux for her birthday. She also just had a beautiful baby girl, so this is a congratulations gift as well.

Her prompt was:

Severus standing, as though before a class, hands behind his back, with an eyebrow raised in...question? Amusement? Disdain? A mix?

So, here he is. For the first time ever, I didn't use a reference photo. *wibbles* I wanted the expression to be intimidating yet unreadable. Is he thinking WTF? Is he thinking 'dear Merlin, just kill me now!'? Or is he pleased? Impressed?

My Luna costume is coming together. I might have two Luna costumes for Azkatraz...but I'll definitely have at least one. I'll also have my anon Death Eater and Slytherin costumes.

Here's some pics. I don't have a wig yet...but you can see the general idea. Pink jacket is courtesy of dixiebell12 . I made the earrings out of paperclay and the necklace out of butterbeer corks (duh!) and wooden beads from droxy 's old sewing chair cover that finally gave out on her. Thanks Dixiebell and Droxy! Repurposing at its best! I was a total slacker and purchased the spectrespecs from this lovely crafter. I must admit...the specs make the costume.

I used this still from Sweeney Todd as a reference photo. This is the first time I've used Rickman for a reference, though I didn't want a Rickman Snape, so I tried to make it not look like him. Full size is on my deviantart page.
